Liberalisation will not affect Bumiputra interests

KUALA LUMPUR, July 12 — The recent liberalisation moves initiated by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak to boost the economy will not hinder the government’s continuing support of Bumiputra interests.

The prime minister stressed on this in an interview carried live on TV1 earlier tonight.

“The approach has changed, but we will continue to look after Bumiputra interests,” he said.

Also in the interview, Najib said that the much-anticipated targets for the government’s key performance index (KPI) would be announced at the end of the month.

The interview follows the unprecedented “First 100 Days” event held yesterday in which the PM emphasised that his administration would focus on six national key result areas – crime prevention, combating corruption, providing greater access to quality and affordable education, improving the quality of life for the poor, improving rural infrastructure and upgrading public transportation in the medium term.

He said: “The success of the government and my administration depends on the KPI achievement. It is easier if we did not choose this path, as there won’t be so much pressure. Now the pressure is on to perform.

“We have to set a high target, but not too high until it is unrealistic. If the target was too low, then the people would think the KPIs were meaningless.”

Asked about the government’s performance under his premiership so far, Najib said it would be more appropriate to measure the success of his administration after a full term and not just after 100 days.
