KUALA KRAI, July 15 — If there was one thing that PAS did well throughout the Manek Urai by-election campaign, it was pretending that all was well in the party.
It pretended that the senior leaders of the party were united, when it was an open secret that certain leaders, including deputy president Nasharudin Mat Isa, were barred from campaigning.
The ban was only lifted after the state leaders realised the national implication of such an action.
Nasharudin's brief appearance in the rural constituency, and his act of performing prayers with Datuk Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat, was among attempts to show that all was well between the PAS No. 2 and the state leadership.
The Bachok MP had initially admitted that he was barred from campaigning, only to make a U-turn hours later, pretending not to know anything about such a directive.
PAS also tried to show that the unity government or unity talks episode — which caused the campaign ban in Manek Urai — was finally behind it.
But the problem was hardly solved.
Just weeks earlier PAS Youth and Umno Youth held a joint press conference to announce their intention to hold what they termed as “intellectual discussions”, just one day after senior Pakatan Rakyat (PR) leaders declared their commitment to the coalition.
The weeks before campaigning started also saw a central committee member barred from criticising the unity government proposal, which was mooted by party president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang.
A commentary by Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad, the PAS strategist, slamming the idea was removed from the party newspaper, Harakah, and thousands of copies of the publication had to be reprinted.
Throughout the campaign PAS also projected the stability and the success of the Kelantan state government led by Nik Aziz.
At all rallies the party spiritual adviser spoke of the implementation of Islamic principles in the state, and how well Kelantan was run compared to other Barisan Nasional (BN) states.
But the days of stability in the Kelantan government are numbered.
The frail-looking Nik Aziz has no credible succession plan.
The most popular and perhaps experienced executive councillor Datuk Husam Musa had publicly said that he was not interested in leading the state government.
But like any Islamist movement, PAS has to continue pretending that everything is well, in line with the practice of keeping the secrets of the jemaah from the public.
And it paid the price yesterday when more than 1,000 voters who had voted for the party just last year backed BN instead, giving PAS an embarrassingly tiny margin of victory of 65 votes.
For PAS, pretending can be fatal.

Maybe the 1000+ voters are UMNO supporters that voted arwah Ismail despite party differences because their confidence in him transcended party lines.
Wouldn't it be nice to have more leaders like that?

The media in Malaysia has become attack-dogs for the BN. Their motive quite clearly is to destroy public trust in the Pakatan Rakyat.
Now, not only the BN, even the media smells of dead ones rotting.

The Manek Urai episode is just a hiccup that could be avoided in a general election where national issues are more important than local issues. The mobilisation of federal government machineries both in terms of men and materials are hard to combat. The election was not run on a level playing field.
What ever it is PAS need to look at the internal differences and take corrective measures immediately. PAS should speak with one voice. Slogans may have to be modified in areas such as Manek Urai where the overwhelming majority are Muslims so the PAS for all tag line may not be effective but Develop with Islam should be chosen instead.

I am baffled as to why PAS needs to have unity talks with UMNO, given the massive support they received from various races during the previous General Election. If it ain't broken, don't fix it!!

BN noticed that the turned up of voters was already touching 60% at noon yesterday, and they knew that it is going to be bad for BN, they were so desperate and had no choice to start buying votes with money openly to fight for survival, and they almost achieved it. If that's the salary for the campaign workers, they can pay them after the by-election, usually the workers are pay daily basis. Obviously BN is playing with money on politic, even though they loss with little margin, but the image of BN is spoiled, how the explanation going to be, and would not help anymore, the scared will still remained in the heart of people, BN is corrupted and misused tax payer money to buy votes.

The venom UMNO insidiously injected into PAS has taken toll. Those who succumbed to UMNO's devilish temptation in PAS nearly encumbered the party into a home-ground defeat. Evidently there are UMNO informants are inside PAS as you could easily feel that UMNO were directing their vicious attack on Tok Guru Aziz, as if it was a personal blackening campaign.
The 2 old frogs and a bunch of young froggies will continue to be adamant and cause damages to PAS. They still don't realize that once PAS is beaten down to the ground, UMNO will just chuck them in the trash bin. So these froggies better decide now, full dedication to PAS or go join the devils, don't fling outside and bring disease back to house.

You can tell that this journalist above is crap material. He talks about Pas having no succession plan. But why would they need a succession plan? Do the Democrats and Republicans in the US need any succession plan? It is only in the corrupt party like Umno where you need to make sure that one corrupt leader takes over from the previous corrupt leader, and also the rest of the corrupt jokers move up the ladder.

1. Pending unity talk
2. RM300 transport allowance
3. BN is gaining popularity because of the 11 goodies by PM
4. PR foundation is still shaky hence supporters are not sitting on the fence.
5. Too high voters turn out rate - fishy!!??.

The truth is PAS only lost 399 votes... this is because some of the outside voters wasnt comeback.
Maybe the extra votes for BN came from any of the 6000 cops who were actively dutied in Manek Urai.

Yup, i could see that gloat coming our way. Anyway, good lesson to PAS - and to DAP & PKR. You fight some more la, talk more rubbish, care less for the people, and just continue digging a can of worms, there won't be a PAKATAN RAKYAT by the next GE - seriously speaking.

My bet? They didn't vote PR in KT. They didn't vote PR in Bkt Selambau or Penanti. Not sure about Bkt Gantang.
They want the Malay to vote their DAP goons but they can't even get their own to vote for PAS goons. No wonder Hj Hadi is upset. PAS is forced to get Malay to vote for these goons but LKS & LGE just melepas batuk ditangga to influence Chinese to vote for PAS.
Don't like it? It's a fact pangyou...........
