KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 12 — Home Minister Datuk Seri Hishammudin Hussein today called on ex-policemen to remain close with and be supportive of the government in facing current challenges.
He said with the various challenges facing the country, there should be love and care for the country.
“Their thinking, discipline, love for the country, the spirit of patriotism and love for the nation, as well as the 1Malaysia spirit should continue to burn until they die,” he said in his speech at the Ex-Policemen’s Patriotic Day celebration here today.
He said ex-policemen should play their role as “neutralisers” to ward off accusations by irresponsible quarters with intention to tarnish the police’s image and integrity.
Speaking to reporters later, Hishammuddin said several plans and measures were being taken to further improve the Royal Malaysian Police, including its service scheme and welfare of its personnel.
He said they included revising the existing service scheme and on the need to increase its force.
“Currently, 100,000 policemen have to serve more than 26 million people in the country, a ratio of 1:260,” he added.
Hishammuddin said efforts would also be made to identify suitable approaches to enhance the work quality and working environment for policemen, as well as providing the force with better facilities and equipment.
On providing better living conditions for policemen, he said police housing units would be equipped with three rooms, from two rooms previously.
He said it involved 13 housing projects, costing RM45.7 million under the Ninth Malaysia Plan.
The police cooperative would also be restructured to enable it to provide more facilities for its members, he added. – Bernama
