12 deaths on day 9 of Ops Sikap

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 22  – Twelve deaths from road accidents were recorded yesterday, bringing the death toll to 164 since Ops Sikap started on Sept 13.

A Bukit Aman police statement today said one death occurred on highways, five on federal roads, five on state roads and one on municipal roads.

Motorcyclists topped the number of deaths recorded so far, accounting for 82, followed by motorists at 57, pedestrians (nine).

A total of 985 accidents were recorded and 7,078 summonses issued yesterday.

Federal roads had the most deaths at 342, followed by municipal roads (306), state roads (202), highways (83) and other roads (52).

The operation, aimed at reducing the number of road accidents during Hari Raya, ends on Sept 27. – Bernama
