KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 16 — Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng has called on Malaysians to manage their differences and create a "shared society" instead of using diversity as an excuse to quarrel among themselves.
In his Deepavali message today, Lim said a "shared society" could ultimately lead to social harmony, social inclusion and cohesion among the races.
“We must ensure Malaysia’s diversity of cultures and beliefs, as well as our differences in views and political ideologies, will never be turned into an excuse to fight among ourselves.
“Deepavali as the Festival of Lights is the symbol of the triumph of good over evil. It is a struggle between forces of evil and enlightenment, and we must never allow ourselves to fall into the trap of ignorance and racism,” he said.
The concept of a “shared society”, added Lim, would allow Malaysians to make diversity a positive force for equal opportunity and social justice.
He also underlined four elements in achieving such a society — democratic participation in decision-making, respect for diversity and the dignity of an individual, equal opportunity and the prohibition of discrimination.
“We are fighting against corruption and abuse of power because it will provide development to the people.
“With this spirit, I hope to work with all sections of society including non-governmental organisations and others, in ensuring no one would be left behind, regardless class or creed,” promised Lim.
