REMBAU, Oct 18 — The Barisan Nasional (BN) cohesion shown during the Bagan Pinang state by-election recently should be harnessed to regain the support of the people, said Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin.
He said the victory was attributed to the support of not only the Malays but also the Chinese and Indians.
"Actually, this is BN's winning formula and we do not have to do what PAS had done to win the support of all races," he told reporters at an Aidilfitri open house hosted by him at Kampung Gadong, Kota near here, today.
He was commenting on PAS's readiness to accept its supporters club as its wing to draw the support of various races to the party.
The BN retained the Bagan Pinang state seat in Negri Sembilan when its candidate Tan Sri Mohd Isa Abdul Samad defeated PAS candidate Zulkefly Mohamad Omar with a bigger majority.
Khairy, who is also MP for Rembau, said PAS's drive to get the support of non-Malays was merely empty talk.
"Let us wait and see whether the readiness will be translated into reality. What is important is not the acceptance of the wing but whether PAS is genuinely pursuing the interest of all races," he said.
On Umno Youth's plan to increase its membership, he said more programmes would be held to get the movement closer to the younger generation, which had shown positive response to the BN in the Bagan Pinang state by-election. — Bernama
