KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 22 — A Sabah PKR meeting today ended weeks of uncertainty when the state’s division chiefs agreed to let the party president Datuk Seri Wan Azizah Wan Ismail appoint a new Sabahan state chairman.
The meeting in Kota Kinabalu was chaired by Azmin Ali, whose appointment as the state party leader just four months ago sparked widespread unhappiness.
“From day one, my appointment was on a temporary basis, with the purpose of strengthening the party and after being here for four months, I am satisfied that the leadership has progressed very well,” he told The Malaysian Insider today dismissing the suggestion that he was under pressure to step down.
Azmin said today’s meeting also resolved to let Wan Azizah decide on his replacement.
“I am happy to note that my colleagues are ready and will propose to the party president to identify the new leader to head Sabah PKR,” said Azmin adding that the new state chairman will be named this Sunday.
The PKR vice-president however downplayed the move to replace him, saying that it was part of a major reshuffle of party leadership nationwide.
Today’s two hour meeting was attended by all 25 division chiefs including Datuk Dr Jeffrey Kitingan and former state chief Ansari Abdullah.
The Sabah leadership problem has been linked to Datuk Zaid Ibrahim’s decision to take leave from the central political bureau as he was seen to be siding with the state leaders who are opposed to Azmin’s leadership.
Azmin had denied the allegation.
