Penang DCM lauds co-op for Kg Buah Pala approval

PENANG, Nov 1 — The state government has welcomed the decision of the Penang Government Officers Cooperative to allow Nusmetro Venture (M) Sdn Bhd, the developer of Kampung Buah Pala project, to build 24 units of double-storey terrace houses for the villagers.

In hailing the decision, Deputy Chief Minister II Dr P. Ramasamy said the state government wanted to provide the houses for the villagers who had accepted the offer.

“They would get their houses as the cooperative has approved the building of the houses in Kampung Buah Pala,” he told Bernama when contacted here today.

Yesterday, during an extraordinary general meeting, the cooperative agreed to the state government’s proposal to allow the construction of the houses in Kampung Buah Pala.

Ramasamy said, of the 33 families who stayed on the cooperative land, nine had initially accepted the compensation of about RM75,000 each, while 15 had signed the agreement recently.

However, he said, the rest of the villagers who rejected the offer, still stood a chance to get compensation from the state government, provided they submitted appeal letters to the state government as the offer period had expired.

Meanwhile, cooperative chairman Abdul Razak Mansor said the number of families stated by the state government was different from that given by the developer.

“As far as I am concerned, earlier there were 10 families who had vacated the village and took up the compensation, followed by 12 families who signed an agreement with the state government.

“They would all be allocated a unit each for the double-storey terrace houses,” he said, adding that a request from the remaining 11 families who refused the developer’s offer to vacate the land would not be entertained.

“They must now make claims to the state government and developer. It is up to the developer if it wants to relocate them to another piece of land. The cooperative land is out of bounds,” he said. — Bernama
