DAP disciplinary panel to act against Johor assemblyman

By Debra Chong

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 2 — DAP disciplinary board chief Tan Kok Wai today confirmed its Johor branch has moved for immediate action against Bentayan assemblyman Gwee Tong Hian, suspected of misusing state funds meant for social services.

But Tan told The Malaysian Insider that he cannot do anything — whether to suspend or to sack Gwee — until he receives the formal report.

Tan said he expects to get it within a few days.

From there, the disciplinary committee will fix a date to hear the Bentayan state lawmaker's case. He indicated that it will probably be within the next two weeks.

Tan added that the committee will consider all other aspects of the case, including an ongoing civil suit at the Sessions Court in Muar, before deciding its next course of action.

Asked if the party will take stern measures against a member suspected of graft, Tan replied: “The DAP has always been at the forefront of combating corruption since its inception. We are second to none.”

The Cheras MP stressed that the 44-year-old party will not “tolerate any corruption from any member, be it a party leader or a grassroots member.”

“I believe we practise what we preach,” Tan added.

At its annual party convention held in Johor Baru yesterday, an overwhelming 80 per cent of Johor DAP delegates supported the state leadership's push for Gwee to be hauled up to the central disciplinary board for action.

State party chief Dr Boo Cheng Hau told reporters the state committee had passed a vote of no confidence against Gwee last Sept 13.

Dr Boo is also reported to have said that rumours of Gwee's links with the underworld had been circulating for the past three years.
