DAP wants RM50 credit card tax dropped

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 2 — The DAP has asked the government to remove the RM50 annual service tax on principal credit and charge cards, proposed in the 2010 budget, to help lower income groups.

DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng explained today that credit and charge cards help prevent lower income groups from resorting to loan sharks.

The Bagan MP added that the government does not need additional revenue but should instead cancel the fee and help these groups.

He told reporters in parliament that the government will have a net revenue gain of RM6.3 billion from 2010 budget and does not need the RM555 million from the proposed credit card charge.

“Why not cancel the charge and help the lower income group? Our expenses are still the same but our income has decreased," Lim said.

Prime Minister and Finance Mininster Datuk Seri Najib Razak recently proposed a RM50 charge on each credit and charge card and a RM25 fee for each supplementary card. The proposed charge is aimed to decrease growth of credit card debt. The country is estimated to have 11 million cards in circulation

“If you do and estimate of how much the government will collect, the will be an additional revenue of RM 555 million. If this amount of money is absorbed by the banks, then the impact will not be felt by the people.

“But if this amount of money is to be borne by the consumer, you are taking away this amount from the pockets of the Malaysians and those who will be severely affected are the lower income groups," Lim said.
