IPOH, Nov 13 – The Perak Government will restructure all state government-linked companies (GLCs) to ensure their operations are really geared towards stimulating the economy, Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir said today.
He said the state government will also form several committees, including internal audit, which is free to study existing structural set-up in major GLCs.
“The state government’s move is to ensure a bigger impact on the growth of every GLC and its subsidiaries.
“The move, besides bolstering competitiveness to a higher level, will also increase economic returns,” he told reporters after chairing the board meeting of the State Agriculture Development Corporation (SADC).
Zambry said it has been proposed that the SADC be headed by a chief executive to carry out the restructuring under which SADC's operations will be divided into two sections – services and corporate affairs – each to be headed by a general manager.
Zambry said the SADC will be run in tandem with new economic potentials apart from the oil palm plantation sector, the agency’s core business.
“This is because other areas though more competitive, provide high economic impact to the state’s development,” he said. He said the SADC could venture into the herbal industry as it had received an initial proposal to build the biggest bio-herbal plant in Perak from a foreign company with strategic partners in Australia, France, New Zealand and the United States.
“Though this is only an initial proposal, the state government feels it is worth venturing into. Previously, a subsidiary company was entrusted with the task to study prospects for herbal industry but unfortunately the subsidiary failed to make any progress.
“Now with the changes in the board of directors and advisers, I hope to see changes in business approaches,” he said. Zambry also said the State Economic Action Council headed by Tan Sri Dr Kamal Salih had proposed new strategies for the state development based on geographical factors.
“The strategies are for the entire state, from Tanjong Malim to Kinta Valley and from Batu Gajah to North, encompassing Taiping and Parit Buntar, focusing on specific economic sectors,” he added.– Bernama
