Sarawak stops issuing new licences to make liquor

KUCHING, Nov 13 – Sarawak has decided to stop issuing new licences to liquor manufacturers under the Excise Act 1976, Minister of Social Development and Urbanisation Datuk Sri William Mawan Ikom said today.

He said the restriction by the Treasury would be imposed regardless of the size of their operations or whether the products were for the local consumption or the export market.

“For liquor manufacturers whose licence have been approved and are operating, their excise licences can be renewed,” he said in reply to Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah (BN-Asajaya) at the State Legislative Assembly sitting here today.

However, he added that manufacturers would no longer be able to set up new branches since no licence will be granted for any branch.

He said the government had not set any time frame either to phase out local liquor manufacturers or to limit their monthly sales. – Bernama
