KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 8 — A city church in the leafy Desa Melawati suburb was set on fire at midnight as police warned angry Muslim groups not to protest a controversial ruling allowing Catholic weekly Herald to use “Allah” in its national language section.
The attack on the Metro Tabernacle A/G, an Assemblies of God church in Jalan 4/4C Desa Melawati, completely gutted its administrative office on the ground floor. There were no reported injuries in the midnight attack.
Police have yet to identify the attackers and no one has claimed responsibility for the attack which could be related to anger over the Dec 31 court ruling. The judgment has been suspended pending government appeal.
According to an eyewitness who had just finished a drink at a coffeeshop located directly across the church, three or four persons on two motorcycles stopped in front of the church.
"They proceeded to break the glass panels on the ground floor before pouring some flammable liquid and setting off a fire," said a statement issued by the church.
The church is housed in a three-storey shoplot with the office on the ground floor. Church officials have lodged a police report over the incident.
Earlier in the night, the judiciary website was defaced and later taken offline.
The Metro Tabernacle is not affiliated to the Roman Catholic Church which had challenged a 2007 order to stop using “Allah” to describe the Christian God in the Herald's Bahasa Malaysia section.
The Herald is tightly circulated among the mainly Muslim country's estimated 850,000 Catholics who worship in English, Mandarin, Tamil and Bahasa Malaysia.
The Roman Catholic Church had agreed not to object to suspend the judgment out of "national interests" as Muslim groups objected to the ruling and threatened to protest.
The groups have organised protests after Friday prayers at two mosques in Kuala Lumpur today despite police orders not to proceed.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak and his cousin Home Minister Datuk Hishamuddin Hussein have backed the right to protest within mosque grounds to the chagrin of many who have been previously detained at opposition gatherings.
Meanwhile, Kuala Lumpur police chief Mohamad Sabtu Osman said it was premature to link the attack on the church to the protests over the Allah ban.
''We are still investigating,'' he told the Associated Press. He also urged Muslims not to participate in the planned protests, adding that police would be stationed at mosques to monitor the situation.
Police limit gatherings in public to five people and usually take tough action, including using tear gas and chemically-laced water from water cannons, to disperse protests.

Hallowed be thy name,
Thy Kingdom come,
They will be done,
On earth as it is in heaven,
Give us this day our daily bread,
Forgive us for our trespasses,
AS WE FORGIVE THOSE WHO TRESSPASSED AGAINST US,
Lead us not into temptation,
But deliver us from evil,
For thine is the kingdom,
The power and the glory,
Forever and ever,
Amen.
Be calm my brothers and sisters. Be strong and firm but calm. Be slow to anger. DO NOT PLAY INTO THE DANGEROUS GAMES THAT UMNO IS PLAYING!

I fully agree with Ku Li that an intolerant Umno is just playing with sensitivies and not abiding by principles. Let us see what top Umno leaders say regarding today protest against the High Court decision on the usage of the word "Allah"
1. The Home Ministry said that the govt allows the protest to be held in mosques but later denied saying it by blaming that he was misquoted and push the responsibility to IGP Musa
2. The PM said you cannot stop people gathering in mosques for prayers and thereafter hold a protest within the compound. By extension he is also saying that you cannot stop people gathering in temples and churches for prayers and then hold a protest thereafter.
3. The DPM said it is up to the Home Minister.
4. IGP Musa said no permit therefore the protest is illegal.
This is all deliberately very confusing, vague and non committal. Looks all they want to be is to be seen championing Islam but if things get out of control they cleverly create a safe way out for themselves to point fingers at others and not take the responsibility but if things go their way take all the credit. The fall guy looks is likely to be IGP Musa if things get out of hand. I suppose that is the price he has to pay for his contract to be renewed.
By the way no Umno minister cares to explain the judgment in full to the Muslims and the public t large. Maybe it is too much to ask NST, Utusan and BH to carry out a full explanation of the judgment.
Whereas only international renowned Muslim organisations like Islam Today clarifies that the word 'Allah" precedes even Islam and Christianity and is not the exclusive preserve of Muslims and Islam but this has fallen on the deaf ears those Malaysian muslims who want to claim ownership and exclusivity of the word.

God desires us to respect authority, truth must prevail and peace must be preserved.
When destructive behaviours like fire bombing churches happen, there is a real danger of opening a Pandora's Box of greater destruction.
May good sense prevail and the peace in our nation be preserved, in the Name of The Prince of Peace.

Allah says in the quran that the most devine thing is tauhid ie believe in thy creator. For tauhid is the most esteem of all to HIM.
As I digest in the Quran's teaching is that all human beings are HIS creation. What is most important is to unite as one no matter what your believes are as long as you believe in HIM. Thus to learn to respect is to learn to live together as brothers and sisters.
Where place of worship are concern never in the name of Islam nor in the name of other faith teaches you to ransack it as act of faith!!! It's more an act of stupidity and misinterpretation of ones religion.

Even though Buddhists and Jains are usually not labeled as atheists, but Buddhism and Jainism are, in fact, atheistic religions. In other words, Buddhists and Jains don't believe in God.
Interestingly, these two atheistic religions are the most peace-loving religions in the world, whereas both the monotheistic religions of Islam and Christianity, have terrible track records of religious wars and persecutions against non-believers.
Even if a billion people were to die fighting over this silly argument, the so-called Almighty and All-Loving Creator God would still keep mum over the dispute. Why no response from God? Are the Buddhists and Jains right after all - that God just does not exist?

The MALAYSIAN Christians are NOT disrespecting the name of Allah, they revere and worship his name...what game are you guys playing at.....?
Malaysians are not confused...it seems you fellas in charge are confused.
First you ask people to 'Bertenang', then you say its OK to protest ? DOUBLE SPEAK? Are you testing or stoking the Barometric Pressure of your ULTRAMEN?
Rather than uniting the people in harmony, you have become responsible for supporting this deliquent and dangerous behaviour with your rethoric....you have sown the seeds for your own downfall in the Here AND the Hereafter. How do you expect malaysians to forget the cowshead and now this....? HOW? HOW? HOW? You leaders have LED US INTO THIS.... I am truly ashamed...truly.
How many more incidents like this of your making can the people endure....? How can you possibly lead the 1Malaysia you profess......this is worthless sloganeering.
YB KU LI it is time for you to walk away from this toxic ground you call a party, they do not share your vision or principles. Their venom is too strong for your antidote.

Understanding and love of the rakyat create unity, harmony and prosperous nation.
The catholic should understand to what extend they can use the word Allah. Do not blaspheme another religion by using the word in the wrong context.
The muslim should understand that Allah is an arabic word, not exclusive to Islam. Execute love as god's will to make others understand, and not brute force to agreviate the issue.
I hope all catholic can understand and recite Al Fatiha, and all muslim The Our Father.
You will see that you are both praying to the SAME Almighty God, the Creator.

we thank god. We are moving to a new building as soon as the CF is signed, one far bigger and it's built behind giant batu caves, hopefully more fire resistant :)
Please don't go stereotyping the muslims and go around hating them. let's not make history repeat itself.

This government is fearful to confront a small group of extremists that puts its stamp on society gradually eroding established standards and converting the country into an intolerant, sad, funless, docmatic and indoctrinated place. Unfortunately, the inactivity of government and the silent majority in the muslim community permits these aggressive elements to proceed. This MUST stop! Speak up! Stop being bullied by a minority of morons!
