GEORGE TOWN, Feb 5 — An effigy of Penang Chief Minister, Lim Guan Eng was set alight today by a group of protestors from two Malay NGOs, during a demonstration against what the group claims were discriminatory practices by the local administration.
The Penang Malay Chamber of Commerce and National Malay Students Federation (GPMS), the organisers for the protest today, claimed the local council had acted in a discriminatory manner when it tore down several unlicensed hawker stalls in the state.
The demonstrators gathered at a nearby mosque prior to Friday prayers and proceeded to the state government offices housed in the Komtar building shortly after, in an attempt to deliver a memorandum of protest to Lim.
After arriving at their destination, the group were unable to secure a meeting with the chief minister, prompting them to torch an effigy of Lim, which they had brought along.
Perkasa founder, Datuk Ibrahim Ali also took part in the demonstration.
Police and FRU officers, who were on the scene to manage the crowd, at one point attempted to prevent the group from continuing their march towards Komtar but were unsuccessful.

Another evidence of incompetency shown by PRDM (Polis Raja Di Malaysia) when dealing with Umno sponsored protests. If it was a protest by the real Rakyat, PRDM would be firing tear gases and blasting those present with water canon laced with chemical.

If it is unlicensed then the stalls should be pulled down. That's what UMNO govt would do. Protestors should be arrested and that includes Ibrahim Ali.

these bums who love to hit the streets so much and bark around should in fact be crawling on all fours. they are no better than the stray animals roaming aimlessly and contributing nothing meaningful for national development. they have become so free that they have actually turned into the biggest bums in the whole of malaysia, including perhaps, the entire asean. if they are not willing to work, they should sit at home to give their tired womenfolks a good massage instead of going around barking wildly and trying to prove that they can be the most uncivilised herd around. otherwise the authorities should herd them up and let them do some useful community service.

I think there maybe someone behind trying to create problem for Pakatan Rakyat. Looking at it Perak, Selangor, Kelantan, Penang get all kind of problem. But this show that Pakatan Rakyat is honest because they never create problem for other states that not rule by them.

The police and FRU failed in their attempts to stop the demonstrators or is it the police and FRU halfheartedly tried to stop the demonstrators? Whatever happened to all the tear gas and chemically laced water cannons?
I see Perkasa was also at the function. Just my two cents but I bet that the majority of the Penang Malay Chamber of Commerce and National Malay Students Federation members are also Perkasa members. Isn't burning effigies and pictures of leaders not the Asian way unless of course it is Perkasa that is doing the burning, then that's showing good Asian values.

Ibrahim Ali was rejected by UMNO in Kelantan, and he's trying to shore up support by being racist. He does not show respect for a democratically elected leader by the majority by allowing his followers to step on effigies or pictures as it's "kurang ajar". LGE, stand your ground as you have the support of the majority. These racists are just out to create trouble, and Ibrahim Ali has his own agenda to futher his PERKASA as he got nowhere in UMNO Kelantan.

They trying to stop authority from doing lawful act (tearing down illegal / unlicense hawker stall). And for this they asking LGE to resign. What a disgrace for PMCC a legitimate organisation to try to promote illegal acts instead helping hawkers to get proper license to do business! And does GPMS know what they are doing? Very sad state!

When an ex chief minister accused of raping underage bumiputragirl only LGE came forward and fight for the victim's family but our Perkasa boss Ibrahim Ali or the NGO's who championing bumiputra has no guts to interfere or call for justice. So we know LGE is for justice but you "Ibrahim Ali" the more you hate him the more LGE grows ask your boss Tun Mahatir with whose help he became rich and how Malaysia growed.

The maturity of a race is reflected by the actions of the community when it is faced with a provocative action. Burning effigies is certainly in bad taste and reflects the mentality of the perpetrators (GPMS). In the Middle East and Indonesia, this has been done when one's religion has been insulted. But in Malaysia, this is done when the dominant community has lost the power to lord over others. It is notable that other communities do not practise burning effigies.
Surely a responsible police force will do all it can to prevent such incidents. The Home Minister is responsible for this shortcoming but he shows no signs of concern or shame. His father and grandfather are turning in their graves!
