KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 21 – A second wave of flood has hit Kelantan when Sungai Kelantan burst its bank and forced 224 people from Kuala Krai to flee their homes this afternoon.
State flood operation centre spokesman said 224 people from Kuala Krai took refuge at Sekolah Kebangsaan Telekong, Kuala Krai at 4pm.
“They are from Kampung Telekong near the river bank. Fourteen people from three families in Rantau Panjang were also rescued when flash floods inundated their homes following heavy downpour,” he told Bernama. Intermittent rain, occasionally heavy in Kelantan is expected to persist until next weak. All main roads are still open to traffic.
The water level reading at Sungai Golok in Jenob, Tanah Merah at 23.72 metres exceeded the danger level by 0.22 metres while another reading at Rantau Panjang almost reached the danger level at nine metres.
The Sungai Kelantan reading at Tualang, Gua Musang; Tangga Krai, Kuala Krai; Kusial, Tanah Merah; and Tambatan Diraja have almost reached the alert level. Floods hit Kelantan early this month, causing about 3,000 people in Rantau Panjang and Tumpat to be evacuated. Two people died in the floods.
In KUANTAN, 24 evacuees from three families from Kampung Sungai Ular were still sheltered at a surau at the Kampung Darat Hardcore Poor People’s Housing Scheme.
Pahang police flood operation room spokesman said only Kampung Sungai Ular near Kuantan was hit by floods yesterday and the situation hardly changed.
In KUALA TERENGGANU, floods worsened with more roads closed and the number of people rescued rose to 338 people from 83 families as of 5pm.
Terengganu National Security Council operation room spokesman said they were from Hulu Terengganu (165 people from 36 families), Marang (18 from four families), Dungun (31 from nine families) and Kemaman (124 from 34 families).
He said they were sheltered at mosques, community halls or relatives’ homes, and 13 evacuation centres had been opened. Besut and Setiu were reported to be flooded but the number of people evacuated had yet to be ascertained.
In Hulu Terengganu, two roads are closed to light vehicles. They are Jalan Sungai Tong-Kuala Berang in Kampung Kepah and Jalan Tengkawang-Lubuk at Km16.
Four more roads closed to all traffic. They are Jalan Kejir to Kampung Jak (Km4, Km5, Km6), Jalan Pengkalan Ajal (Km7), Jalan Batu 24 to Pengkalan Ajal (Km3 at Kampung Paya Besar) and Jalan Matang to Kampung Nibong.
In Setiu, Jalan Sungai Tong to Pelong (Km9, Km10) is closed to all traffic while Jalan Hulu Sedang at Kampung Che Long is closed to light vehicles.
In Marang, Jalan Pengkalan Berangan/Pulau Kerengga at Kampung Alor Wan Said is closed to all traffic while in Besut, Jalan Jertih/Keruak (Km14) and Jalan Kuala Terengganu-Kota Bharu (Km113) are also closed to all traffic.
As of 5pm, the water level at Sungai Besut, Sungai Nerus, Sungai Berang and Sungai Telemong exceeded the danger level while the reading at Sungai Setiu, Sungai Marang and Sungai Kerteh at Batu Putih was at the alert level.
Meanwhile, 159 students and lecturers from the Kota Baru Polytechnic, who were stranded while on a camping trip in the Lata Belatan recreational area at the foothills of the Tebu Mountain near Jabi, were brought to safety at 4pm by four buses.
There were no injuries and they were ferried by four buses, said Besut deputy police chief DSP Roslan Hasan. – Bernama
