JAN 8 — This goes out to all the would-be protestors who plan to demonstrate after Friday prayers as well as the arsonists who are responsible for burning the churches.
Dear all,
Assalamualaikum. Do you know what this greeting actually means? Of course, you do. You probably say this a few times a day. Heck, the same people who were at the gathering outside the Sultan's palace yesterday said this to each other. You know what, even the cow’s-head protestors last year started their tirade after prayers with an "Assalamualaikum".
Let me ask you again: do you know what it means?
Never mind the fact that at least three churches have been attacked. Let's not think about the fact that huge protests are being planned today by "NGOs". Let's also not forget that many of these "champions" of Islam are fighting against non-Muslims being allowed to use "Allah". It's so "brilliant" what they are doing. I am SO sure that non-Muslims will be persuaded after this to convert to Islam.
In fact, judging from what's been happening in this country, from stepping on a cow's head, attacking churches, demonstrations... I'm pretty sure a really good picture of Islam is being painted, don't you think?
Let's forget all that. Freeze time, okay? Just for a minute, guys.
Now, I admit that I'm not an overly religious person. I don't pray five times a day, I question everything, I'm ruled by logic. But going back to when I was young, I remember asking my Ustaz this during Quran class:
Me: Ustaz, what does assalamualaikum mean?
Ustaz: My dear boy, that is a good question. It means PEACE BE UPON YOU. We say it to people when we meet them.
Now, I can't quote surahs like a learned scholar and point out verses to justify my point. Perhaps I've also grown jaded these days.
But you know something?
Peace be upon you. Imagine that. Such a beautiful translation, a phrase so simple yet so revealing about the nature of Islam. You do not need to go through scores of books to ascertain what Islam is. It's a religion of peace. Each time you meet someone, the first thing a true Muslims wishes on the other person is peace.
Now back to reality. Can you imagine a Muslim, all bent with purpose and determination, going somewhere with an intent to cause harm? What kind of Muslim is that? How does his faith propel him to propagate violence?
From what I understand the use of force is always the LAST RESORT in the Quran. (Check it yourself, my learned Muslim friends, yes you with the protest banners.)
And my friends, believe me... we are FAR from being put in a place where we have no other alternatives.
Wanting to harm another person, or even the thought of it, is clearly wrong in Islam, no matter what justification you give: you say that it is a question of aqidah, and you have to protect your religion from being belittled.
Hello, who is having a crisis of faith here? Christians using the word Allah will it cause Muslims to be converted to Christianity? How shallow can one's mindset be? If that is all it takes for your faith to be shaken, I think you're in big trouble my friend.
Violence is an easy way out, yes. It's also cool, isn't it, to be all high and mighty?
Forgive me. I digress at times. See I get carried away by emotions too, just like you.
You know what the difference between us is though? I always remember this old saying: sabar separuh daripada iman.
Patience is a test of faith indeed.
So how's your faith doing today?

I'm a student at Monash University and i'm majoring in Journalism and International Studies. I'm just curious to know if it's possible for me to write an article a.k.a. work for MI eventhough i'm still studying. I realise I could have written this to the editor instead but seeing that I greatly admire your work, i figured i'd write to you first, before going to the editor. I hope that's alright.
I just want to know whether it's possible for me to do some part-time work for MI, i love to write and i'd really love to gain some experience before i leave for Australia next year.
Thank you :)

Wanting to kill cartoonists, burning down churches etc will never solve anything.
If you look at Muslims collectively, you will see 2 main issues. Number one is leadership and the lack thereof, no where in the Muslim world these days can you find leaders who are honest and free from corruption. Number 2 is education, once being at the forefront of the sciences, these days Muslims the world over struggle to read and write. What happens when you have no leadership and no education? You get zombies who follow aimlessly without thought or reason... Not Muslims!

Nice article. I agree with you, except for the greeting.
It should be Salamun Alaikum (Peace Be Upon You) as stipulated in the Quran and not Assalamun Alaikum which means I Bestow Peace Upon You as only Allah or AsSalam (which happens to be among one of His Most Beautiful Names) can do so.
Please do not just take my word for it. Check it out for yourself.
"When those who believe in Our revelations come to you, say "Salamun Alaikum." Your Lord has ordained mercy from Him and whoever does an evil due to ignorance but then repents and does righteous deeds, He is the Most Forgiving, the Most Merciful." (6:54). See also 7:46 , 13:24 , 16:32, 28:55 and 39:73
"Have you seen those who were forbidden from conspiracy yet persist in doing so, conspiring sinfully, maliciously in defying the messenger. And they greet you not with the greeting ordained by God, and say among themselves: "Let us see if God will punish us for what we say:" Their only destiny is hell wherein they burn; what a miserable destiny." (58:8)
Oh and another thing. Even the Quran commands Muslims to say to non-Muslims: "Salam (Peace)".
The servants of God the Most Merciful are those who walk the earth humbly and who, when the ignorant speak to them, utter: "Peace." (25:63).

Thank you for stripping down to the issue to simple logic. Although some readers admire you for being open-minded, that trait is unfortunately not valued by these desecrators. I shudder to think what would be the outcome if it were mosques that suffered the same treatment. I thank you for making it far more basic.
And yes, it does matter to us all: Do not do unto others what you want others to do unto you.
Still, the Christian response should be to forgive. Grace, that is doing good in return for evil,is supposed to be what sets Christians apart.

It can be witnessed by those suicide bombers who have been told that they are martyrs and will be richly rewarded by Allah. I just wonder why this phenomenon only happen to Muslims. It is also little wonder that none of the Islamic countries are modern and advance in Technologies, the most advance of all is Malaysia and ironically Malaysia has a sizable non Muslims minority, but she is in danger of slipping backwards..

I salute you Brother Shazwan. I do not know the in depth meaning of the usage of ALLAH but I do know
that it is the ALL MIGHTY and the usage should be universal rather confine to a religion. Little do I know
that if I am correct to say this. Jesus is the 24th prophet and Mohammed is the 25th prophet. I would
rather be talking to you based on gaining knowledge rather than burning churches and what not.
PEACE BE WITH YOU

Like many others in this thread, I really do commend you for your sincerity and thoughtfulness in approaching this current religious issue at hand.
More's the pity that the majority of those who seek to condemn the latest ruling by the High Court and resort to street violence are potentially those who do not/are not/will not/cannot have access to peaceful sharings like these online.
I have no doubt whatsoever that many of our fellow Malaysian's (especially Muslims) actually do not have anything against Catholics/Christians using the term 'Allah' in their religious life. It is bcos this issue has been so severely politicized, which has lead to this rather sad state of affairs in our beloved Malaysia today.
Such actions by such small-narrow-minded people only serve to show the rest of the world how truly immature and self-centered we really are, as a country.
What a sad case we've become. Sigh

To only have the word Tuhan, would be incomplete. Allah is the name of God.
When one proclaims "My Lord, My God, forgive me", it is "Ya, Allah, Ya, Tuhanku, ampuni saya."
Can you see the difference, and the necessity of both words?

"Have you taken time really know the issue and understand why Muslims are concerned? Using Muslim terms like Allah and Solat is one of the many subtle methods Christian evangelists use in their effort to convert Muslims and others."
The Muslims and people of other faiths also use the word 'God' in reference to their gods. But Christians are not so stupid to think just because they use the word 'God' that their god is the same as our God. Why is it so easy to sway Muslims when evangelists use the word 'Allah'? If they know their own beliefs, then they would not so easily believe what Christians tell them just because they use the word 'Allah'. All this goes to show is that Muslims have little or no understanding of their own beliefs, other than what is taught to by someone else. And instead of teaching your fellow Muslims to be smart and discern your own faith from those of others, some idiot fanatics decide it's better to hit out against Christians, who by the way, have been using the word 'Allah' in the Herald for YEARS before some nincompoop came along and decided it was a threat to Islam. I suppose if they can't even tell the difference between the Catholic churches and protestant churches that were attacked but had nothing to do with the Herald, it goes to show how more idiotic these people are and how easily they can be swayed by Christians just because of using the word' 'Allah'. I know there are many intelligent educated Muslims out there who know this should not be an issue and oppose the violence. If you are one of them, PLEASE educate your Muslim friends who are of lesser intelligence on what your religion really teaches instead of being roped in by the teachings of idiots who are out to stoke a racial fire in the name of your God. Assalamualaikum.

And if the catholics do use the word Allah to represent the high and mighty creator of this world, shouldn't the muslims be proud of it? The catholics and muslims could be worshiping the same Allah. Whats wrong with that? Or the muslims are just afraid the mosques would be empty and billion dollar projects of building mosques will be taken away?
Whatever it is, lets not try to focus on ourselves and fall prey to religious extremists that only use you to get what they want. Have a think and prey for your revelation.
Cheers Mate
