IAAF says no resolution yet to Semenya case

MONTE CARLO, Nov 20 — The International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) is still seeking a resolution to South African runner Caster Semenya’s gender case, spokesman Nick Davies said today.

Semenya, 18, underwent gender verification tests in South Africa and Germany after winning the women’s 800 metres at the Berlin world championships last August. A panel of experts convened by the IAAF has been studying the results.

In an interview with Reuters, Davies said it had also yet to be decided under what circumstances the 18-year-old would be allowed to compete as a woman.

South Africa’s sports ministry said in a statement yesterday that the IAAF had agreed to allow Semenya to retain her gold medal and prize money.

Santokh Singh in a coma

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 20 — Malaysian football legend Santokh Singh is in a coma at the Kuala Lumpur Hospital.

The 57-year-old who played at the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich, Germany, has been warded at the intensive care unit over the past four days.

His condition has been reported as stable.

Champions League games in fixing probe, says police

BOCHUM, Germany, Nov 20 - A match-fixing ring with more than 200 suspected members fixed or attempted to fix dozens of matches across Europe, including three in the Champions League, German police said today.

Police in Germany, Britain, Austria and Switzerland staged simultaneous raids and arrested 15 people as part of the investigation, which encompasses nine European leagues, Bochum police officials said at a news conference.

Egyptians protest for second day after soccer loss

CAIRO, Nov 20 — Demonstrators gathered for a second day near the Algerian embassy in Cairo today to protest against what they said was violence against Egyptians during a play-off for the World Cup soccer finals.

Egypt recalled its ambassador to Algeria yesterday, accusing Algerian fans of thuggery during the match in Khartoum on Wednesday, which Algeria won 1-0 to qualify for the World Cup in South Africa next year.

The Interior Ministry warned Egyptians against further protests after 11 police officers and 24 demonstrators were injured in riots near the embassy at dawn today. Such demonstrations are almost unheard-of in Cairo.
