ALOR STAR, Aug 20 — The federal government has allocated more than RM8 million for housing aid projects in Kedah between January and March this year through its agencies.
The agencies are the Kedah Region Development Board (Keda) and Giat Mara, which build new houses and carry out repairs respectively.
In a statement to Bernama, the state Federal Development Office said that between January and March, Keda repaired 378 houses at a cost of RM4,158,000 and built 76 new houses costing RM3,040,000.
“Giat Mara repaired 88 houses at a cost of RM968,000,” it added.
Meanwhile, Keda chairman Datuk Ahmad Bashah Md Hanipah said between 2009 and 2011, the agency built 1,931 new houses and repaired 1,395.
He said the federal government had allocated RM78 million to Keda for the period 2009 to 2011. Ahmad Bashah said the agency received a high number of requests from the public and this year its allocation was increased to RM12.3 million.
“We’ll be able to build 206 new houses and repair 378 with this allocation,” he said.
He added that the applications kept increasing every year and there was a long wait list as well. — Bernama
