Robbers escape with RM3m in Penang goldsmith heist

July 13, 2012

BUTTERWORTH, July 13 — Three gunmen posing as customers struck at a goldsmith shop in a hypermarket here today, before escaping with RM3 million in jewellery.

The incident occurred at 2.15pm, at the Seberang Jaya Carrefour hypermarket when there were seven employees manning the shop.

Penang CID deputy chief ACP Mohd Nasir Salleh said the trio had earlier arrived at the goldsmith shop and told the staff they wanted to buy gold chains.

While they were shown some gold chains, he said, the “customers’’ whipped out guns and held up the staff and the lone customer at the premises, he said.

“They then scooped an assortment of jewellery and put them into a bag before escaping in two motorcycles,” he added.

Mohd Nasir said the police were reviewing footage from closed-circuit television cameras to facilitate investigations. — Bernama
