KUALA LUMPUR, May 18 — The Iskandar Regional Development Authority (IRDA) has signed a memorandum of understanding with BSEL Infrastructure Realty Ltd of India (BSEL) for several development projects in Iskandar Malaysia, it was announced today. The Indian company has committed to invest RM15 million in Iskandar Malaysia over 12 years, IRDA said in a statement. IRDA said it would help BSEL seek approval and permission from various authorities to facilitate its development process. |

CHENGDU, May 18 — In the wee hours today after a big aftershock shook Chengdu, Malaysian David Siow was still in a downtown square in the provincial capital to shift boxes stuffed with clothes and public donations onto lorries to prevent them from getting wet by rain. His staff at a fast food franchise had also spent the last few days baking 400 loaves of bread to be trucked into the villages to feed quake victims in southwestern Sichuan province. "We wanted to send the bread yesterday but we could not get them ready. Our factory was running at full speed because we also have to bake for our outlets," said Siow who is also chairman of the Malaysian Association of Sichuan (MAS). |

KUALA SELANGOR, May 18 — The month-long suspension imposed on Konsortium Bas Ekspres Semenanjung, which runs the Semenanjung express bus service, is to guarantee passenger safety and not to inconvenience them. Entrepreneur and Cooperative Development Minister Datuk Noh Omar said the order to stop the operations of the company's 232 buses from May 14 to June 13 was issued after the authorities discovered that many of the buses were involved in road accidents. Commenting on complaints from stranded passengers who were unaware that the buses have been grounded following the suspension order, Noh said he had announced two weeks ago that the company's operations would be suspended. |

KUALA LUMPUR, May 18 — An Indonesian woman believed to be a masseur was found strangled to death with a television cable in a hotel room at Metro Prima, Kepong, today. Police identified the victim as 42-year-old Noraini. Sentul Deputy OCPD Supt Zainuddin Ahmad said she checked into the hotel with a man at 2pm. "After 15 minutes, the man left the hotel alone," he told reporters at the scene. He said a hotel worker found Noraini's body in bed at about 5pm. |

BANGKOK, May 18 — A Malaysian is among eight people injured when a bomb exploded in the border town of Sungai Golok in Narathiwat last night. In the 7.05pm (8.05pm Malaysian time) incident, a bomb planted in a bicycle near a restaurant went off, not far from the Sungai Golok police station. A police spokesman said the explosion injured eight people who were having dinner at the restaurant, including the Malaysian. "All of them suffered minor injuries and have been taken to the Sungai Golok hospital," he told Bernama when contacted. |

This is following the publication by several media organisations of the contents of the Royal Commission of Inquiry report of the V.K. Lingam video clip before the Cabinet's decision to make the report public. He said following the leaks, a detailed study of the security measures that can be taken would be made to prevent a recurrence. |

CHENGDU, May 17 — Ethnic villagers took turns to cook porridge to feed a group of Malaysians throughout their four-day ordeal in the hilly Chinese town of Maoxian where they were cut off by the devastating earthquake that hit southwestern Sichuan province. At night, the Malaysians climbed back into their tour bus to sleep still fearful that another quake would hit. In the daylight hours, they chatted with each other, their handphones put aside after futile attempts to call out because roads and communication lines were severed by the 7.8-magnitude tremor. |
