Ibrahim Ali not keen on joining PKR

KOTA BAHARU, May 18 — Pasir Mas Member of Parliament Datuk Ibrahim Ali said he is not keen on joining Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) despite having been invited by a senior party leader.

The Independent MP, who had been courted by PAS, had been invited to join PKR by vice-president Saifudin Nasution.

"I need time to decide on which party to join. This is because of the bad experience which I had to go through in my earlier political days. Give me six to 18 months," he told reporters here yesterday.

Gerakan still strong, says Koh
KUALA LUMPUR, May 17 ─ Gerakan's image and future prospects have not been marred by the resignation of another of its former leaders, its acting president Tan Sri Dr Koh Tsu Koon said today.

"Gerakan is still very much alive and full of spirit despite the resignations and setback in the March 8 general election," he told reporters after chairing the party's central committee (CC) meeting at Menara PGRM here.

He was asked to comment on Gerakan vice-president and Wanita chief Datuk Rhina Bhar's resignation from the party yesterday.

Bidayuh minister denies it was a ‘silent protest’
KUCHING, May 17 ─ The non-participation of Barisan Nasional (BN) assemblymen from the Bidayuh community during the debate in the just-ended state assembly sitting should not be perceived as a "silent protest" against the government, a Bidayuh state minister said today.

State Environment and Public Health Minister Datuk Michael Manyin said there was no truth in talk that the five Bidayuh assemblymen abstained from taking part in the debate to protest against the exclusion of the Bidayuhs in the federal cabinet.

“The Bidayuh community is happy and thankful to the government despite not having any representation in Parliament," said Manyin, who is widely regarded as the leader of the Bidayuhs, Sarawak's fourth largest ethnic group.

Abdullah to visit Sabah to clear the air

PUTRAJAYA, May 17 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi is to visit Sabah at the end of this month to address outstanding issues in the state.

Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Tan Sri Bernard Dompok said yesterday the prime minister had given an indication for the visit.

The issues include the possibility of Sabah Barisan Nasional (BN) MPs defecting to the opposition, MPs unhappy with Cabinet representation, infrastructure development and illegal immigrants.

These issues were raised in the Dewan Rakyat recently.

Gerakan denies Rhina’s charges

PENANG, May 17 — The Gerakan top leadership has accepted the resignation from the party of its former vice-president and Wanita national chief Datuk Rhina Bhar, but it  denied her claims that the party practised favouritism and sidelined party members from other races..

Party vice-president Datuk Dr Teng Hock Nan said it received Rhina's resignation letter on Monday.

It is believed that Rhina, 59, who joined Gerakan 30 years ago, decided to quit the party due to dissatisfaction with the Gerakan leadership.

"They all have equal opportunities in the party, regardless of race," said Teng, who regretted Rhina's decision.

Nik Aziz suggests Rulers explain ‘ketuanan Melayu’

KOTA BARU, May 17 — Kelantan Menteri Besar Datuk Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat has suggested that the Malay Rulers explain "ketuanan Melayu" or Malay supremacy as certain quarters have become bold enough to question the rights involved.

"The Rulers need to help correct whatever mistakes that have resulted in Malay rights being questioned now," he said at his weekly lecture yesterday.

Nik Aziz said if the Rulers choose to remain silent on this issue, it will continue to be raised and questioned by others for their own ends.

The action of DAP chairman Karpal Singh to question the powers of the Perak Sultan over the reinstatement of the state Islamic Religious Department director has incurred the ire of the Malays who regard it as challenging Malay sovereignty. — Bernama

 
Hindraf chief urged to come back and resolve issues

KUALA LUMPUR, May 16 — Hindu Rights Action Force (Hindraf) chairman P. Waythamoorthy, who is reported to be in London, has been urged to return home and stop seeking foreign support for its cause.

Malaysian Indian Youth Council president A. Rajaratnam said Waythamoorthy's effort would not solve problems but would instead tarnish the good name of the country.

"This is bad for the country. He has to come back," Rajaratnam said today.

Perak Umno Youth questions MB’s silence
KUALA LUMPUR, May 16 ─ Perak Umno Youth continues to question Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Mohammad Nizar Jamaluddin's attitude in keeping mum over DAP chairman Karpal Singh's action of questioning the prerogative of the Perak Sultan in ordering the reinstatement of Datuk Jamry Sury as Perak Islamic Religious Department director.

Its chief Zainol Padzi Paharuddin said he was surprised with the Menteri Besar's silence over the issue which also raised many questions.

"We are surprised why the Perak MB has not stated his support for the Sultan and has not defended the Ruler over the issue, while the Perak Mufti Datuk Seri Harussani Zakaria had told Karpal not to question the powers of the Sultan and Datuk Jamry's reappointment.

"Is he scared of losing his position or is forced to be a puppet to the DAP?" Zainol Padzi asked in a statement yesterday.
