Big Brown sweeps Preakness, sets up for 1st Triple Crown in 30 years

BALTIMORE, May 18 — Not once but twice, jockey Kent Desormeaux sneaked a peek to see if anyone was gaining on Big Brown. "I looked between my legs, under my arms, and they were eight (lengths) behind me," Desormeaux said. "I stopped pushing. I said, 'That's enough'."

His big bay colt ran away with the Preakness yesterday and now is pointed squarely down the path toward the Triple Crown.

The 3-year-old with the perfect record heads for the Belmont Stakes in three weeks as the fourth horse this decade to try for the triple, a sweep last accomplished by Affirmed in 1978. The last to try was Smarty Jones in 2004.

"Wow is all I can say," Steve Cauthen, who rode Affirmed, said by telephone from Kentucky. "He looks pretty special. It was like a cakewalk for him. The

Harry Redknapp finally wins a major trophy

WEMBLEY, May 18 — Harry Redknapp finally has a major trophy to show for his 25 years of coaching.

Redknapp's Portsmouth side beat Cardiff 1-0 yesterday to win the FA Cup for the first time since 1939. It brought a thrilling ending to an emotional season for Redknapp, following his highly publicised arrest in a corruption probe and the death of his sister-in-law.

"Fantastic, for everybody, especially my family," Redknapp said. "The fans, the players. It's been a difficult year off the field so this is a dream come true. We're a very close family — it's for all my grandchildren and everybody. The players are all great, I love them all."

Kanu goal wins Portsmouth the FA Cup
LONDON, May 18 ─ Nwankwo Kanu scored a first-half goal yesterday for Portsmouth to beat Cardiff 1-0 and win the FA Cup final for the first time since 1939.

The Nigerian striker took advantage of a fumble by Cardiff goalkeeper Peter Enckelman in the 37th minute of the 127th FA Cup final to give manager Harry Redknapp his first major trophy in 25 years of coaching.

“Fantastic. For everybody, especially my family,” said Redknapp, whose sister-in-law Pat Lampard — mother of Chelsea’s Frank Lampard — died of cancer last month. “The fans, the players. It’s been a difficult year off the field so this is a dream come true. We’re a very close family — it’s for all my grandchildren and everybody. The players are all great, I love them all.”

The champions can only get better

MAY 17 — Alex Ferguson was brimming with joy as he savoured his 10th Premiership title.

That says it all for last weekend’s title-decider. If any one deserves credit for the success of this latest back-to-back Premiership title, it is the Scot himself.

After this record-setting top flight win by a manager, Ferguson proclaimed that his team now had the momentum to win the Champions League against their league runner-up Chelsea.

Ex-Olympic star gets 46 months’ jail for cheque fraud

NEW YORK, May 17 — Olympic gold medallist Tim Montgomery’s once-celebrated life continued its long downward spiral yesterday when a federal judge sentenced the former “world’s fastest man” to nearly four years in prison for dealing in bad cheques.

The judge also warned Montgomery, 33, that the evidence against him “does not appear to be flimsy” in an ongoing case in Virginia, where he is accused of selling heroin. A conviction there would carry a minimum mandatory five-year sentence.

Montgomery, wearing a white T-shirt and baggy pants, lamented the turns his life has taken as he asked Judge Kenneth Karas for leniency just before the 46-month sentence was imposed.

Weightlifting still struggling to escape its sordid history

ATLANTA, May 17 — Remember the All Drug Olympics, a hilarious “Saturday Night Live” skit in which athletes were encouraged to use whatever performance-enhancing drugs they wanted?

When it comes to weightlifting, that’s no laughing matter.

The sport has been riddled with drug use throughout its sordid history, and a recent rash of doping cases has done little to lift the cloud of suspicion with the Beijing Olympics less than three months away.

Even those who insist they are clean — and have monthly tests to back it up — know what people are saying behind their backs.
